About ZBiotics

At ZBiotics, we make genetically engineered probiotics that improve daily life. As a group of motivated, yet down-to-earth people, we are fueled by two things: a love for science and a commitment to being people-first. GMO products like ours, built to create benefits for people in their daily lives, are the future. As the first to market, we believe it's our duty to set a high bar for product quality, safety, and transparency for others to follow.

In 2019, ZBiotics launched Pre-Alcohol, the world’s first genetically engineered probiotic designed to break down the alcohol byproduct that leads to rough mornings after drinking. In 2024, we launched a genetically engineered probiotic drink mix, Sugar-to-Fiber, that creates fiber from the food you eat. This revolutionary product helps to improve the diversity of gut bacteria and overall gut health.

With a full line of genetically engineered probiotics in development, our team is growing. We’re looking for people as excited as we are to build this new category of consumer products. ZBiotics is headquartered in San Francisco and backed by venture investors including Y Combinator and Khosla Ventures, among others.

About the Role

As an Associate Data Analyst, you’ll be an early contributor to ZBiotics’ growing Data & Analytics function. This role is especially well-suited for data analysts who want to grow into analytics engineering and deepen their technical skills while staying close to business impact. You will partner with cross-functional teams like Supply Chain, E-commerce, and Marketing to understand their data needs. You’ll create reports and data assets to give your partner team insights into their function, and maintain reporting that supports the function’s operations.

In your first 6 - 12 months, you’ll build on your existing SQL and analytical experience and also design reliable data models, maintain data pipelines, and support scalable analytics in our Analytics tech stack (Fivetran, BigQuery, dbt, Hex). You’ll work closely with your manager and cross-functional partners to turn raw data into well-structured, trustworthy datasets, metrics, and insights.

The Impact You’ll Have

As part of a small and collaborative Data & Analytics team, your work will help shape how ZBiotics uses data day-to-day. You’ll support teams with data they can trust while growing from analysis-heavy work into more engineering-oriented responsibilities.

Specifically, you will:

  • Grow from Analysis into Analytics Engineering

Take analyses you may already be comfortable doing and help productionize them — turning one-off SQL queries into reusable, tested, and documented data models in dbt. You’ll learn how to think about data modeling, maintainability, and long-term usability.

  • Support Decision-Making with Better Data Foundations

Create reliable data assets that ZBioneers use to make decisions. It will be critical to build trust with your cross-functional partners by understanding the problem(s) they’re facing.

  • Develop a Shared Understanding of the Business

Use your analytical mindset to help define metrics, validate assumptions, and create shared context across the company. Your work will help ensure teams are aligned on what the data means — not just what it says.

  • Learn and Improve Continuously

Receive mentorship, feedback, and code review as you build confidence in analytics engineering best practices. As the business grows, you’ll have increasing opportunities to take ownership of models, data sources, and analytical domains.

Your responsibilities will include:

Business & Operations Analytics Projects

  • Partner with Operations, Marketing, and Product to understand their questions and workflows
  • Use SQL (and Hex) to explore data, validate hypotheses, and support decision-making
  • Help define and document metrics so stakeholders have consistent interpretations
  • Participate in focused improvement projects (e.g., Web Analytics), such as:
    • Supporting accurate capture and parsing of web/mobile event data
    • Assisting with experiment and A/B test analysis
    • Pulling together data from multiple sources to understand customer behavior
    • Staying curious about the digital and performance marketing ecosystem

Ad Hoc Analysis

  • Answer business questions using SQL-based analysis
  • Ensure that the results of your analyses answer the questions effectively. Focus on your stakeholders’ understanding and their take-aways.
  • Identify opportunities to turn repeat questions into reusable datasets or models
  • Surface any errors or issues in the underlying datasets

Analytics Engineering & Data Modeling

  • Write and maintain SQL-based models in dbt, with an emphasis on clean, readable, and well-documented SQL
  • Refactor existing analyses into production-ready models and tables
  • Help integrate and validate data from core sources (e.g., Retail, Pipe17, Shopify)
  • Contribute to testing and data quality checks to ensure trustworthy reporting
  • Learn and apply best practices around version control, code review, and model organization

Experience must-haves

Technical Skills

  • Strong SQL skills, including joins, aggregations, CTEs, and window functions
  • Experience using SQL to answer business questions and build analyses
  • Familiarity with (or strong interest in learning) dbt, data modeling, and analytics engineering best practices
  • Basic understanding of statistical concepts; experience with experimentation or A/B testing is a plus

Experience

  • 1–3 years of experience as a data analyst, analytics engineer, or similar role
  • Experience building dashboards, reports, or recurring analyses for stakeholders
  • Hands-on experience with marketing, product, or operations data is a plus
  • Prior experience creating/maintaining production dbt data models is a plus but not required

Soft Skills

  • Strong business intuition
  • Persistence in problem-solving, especially around technical challenges
  • Comfort collaborating with stakeholders and translating vague questions into analytical work
  • Willingness to receive feedback and learn through code review
  • Clear communication when explaining both insights and data limitations

This role is for you if …

  • You have 1-3 years of data analyst experience
  • You enjoy writing SQL and want to make your work more reusable and scalable
  • You like thinking about metrics, definitions, and data correctness
  • You want mentorship as you transition into analytics engineering
  • You thrive in a collaborative environment
  • You’re excited by ZBiotics’ values of People, Integrity, Citizenship, and Science
    • People – We always put people first, especially our customers
    • Integrity – We communicate honestly and deliver high quality always
    • Citizenship – We are inclusive and committed to doing what’s right
    • Science – We question our assumptions and adapt to new data

Benefits

We believe in a life well-lived. ZBiotics offers competitive benefits for a life outside of work, including: health / dental, 401(k) matching, a minimum PTO policy (with unlimited time off), 16 weeks fully paid parental leave, a home office stipend, transit benefits for those in the San Francisco Bay Area, full-time work-from-home policy (if desired), and access to co-working office space if located in or visiting San Francisco.

This position may be required to travel to attend occasional ZBioneers or external events.

The base salary for this position is $85,000 per year, and will include additional equity. A presented offer may be higher, depending on qualifications and experience.
