Data Scientist - Movement
ŌURA
Our mission at Oura is to empower every person to own their inner potential. Our award-winning products help our global community gain a deeper knowledge of their readiness, activity, and sleep quality by using their Oura Ring and its connected app. We've helped millions of people understand and improve their health by providing daily insights and practical steps to inspire healthy lifestyles.
Empowering the world starts with living our values and empowering our team. As a quickly growing company focused on helping people live healthier and happier lives, we ensure that our team members have what they need to do their best work — both in and out of the office.
We are looking for a Data Scientist to join our Movement Squad with a focus on unlocking new movement insights through advanced hardware sensing. This squad is responsible for translating sensor capabilities into meaningful, high-impact features for athletes and highly active members aiming to optimize their physical performance.
In this role, you will work at the intersection of hardware, sensing, and algorithm development, where you will build next-generation movement and running dynamics algorithms and investigate how new sensing modalities can improve accuracy and robustness. Your work will directly shape how new hardware capabilities translate into actionable insights and personalized guidance for our members.
This is a remote role based in the U.S. We have offices in San Francisco and San Diego for those who prefer hybrid or office settings, and employee hubs including New York City, Boston, Los Angeles, Seattle, and more.
What You Will Do
- Develop Movement Algorithms: Contribute to the research, prototyping, and development of movement and activity algorithms, with a focus on leveraging existing and emerging hardware sensing capabilities.
- Translate Sensor Data into Insights: Design, build, and deploy production-grade models and analytical pipelines that translate raw sensor data into accurate and actionable movement metrics and personalized insights for Oura members.
- Collaborate on Hardware<>Algorithm Co-Design: Partner closely with Hardware, Firmware, and Engineering teams to evaluate new sensing modalities, understand sensor limitations and tradeoffs, and influence how hardware capabilities translate into reliable movement algorithms.
- Influence Product Direction: Collaborate with Product, Engineering, and Design to shape the technical vision and roadmap for movement sensing and tracking, ensuring solutions are scientifically sound and deliver meaningful member value.
Requirements
We would love to have you on our team if you have:
- MSc degree with 2+ years of relevant industry experience or a PhD in a related field (e.g., data science, biomechanics, signal processing, or machine learning).
- Experience developing and deploying data science or machine learning solutions to production as part of a cross-functional team.
- Hands-on experience working with time-series data from multi-axis accelerometers, gyroscopes, or similar MEMS sensors, ideally in wearables, biomechanics, or motion analysis contexts.
- Strong understanding of sensor data characteristics, noise sources, and real-world constraints, and experience designing algorithms that are robust to these challenges.
- Expert-level proficiency in Python, including deep knowledge of scientific/ML libraries, and experience building robust, scalable, and production-ready code.
- Expert-level proficiency in SQL and data wrangling, and comfort contributing to and maintaining the data pipelines for the features you develop.
- A solid understanding of experimental design, causal inference, and validation methodologies for ML-powered product features.
- Familiarity with end-to-end development using AWS (or a similar cloud service).
- Experience working with international and distributed teams.
- Prior experience in the athletic performance technology space or wearable sensing.
Nice to Have
- A background in biomechanics, kinesiology, or sports science.
- Experience with MLOps principles and tools for model deployment and monitoring.
- Experience with hardware development.
- Experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow).
