Role:
We are seeking a creative and passionate design engineer with a mobile focus to join our team and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of health technology. In this dynamic position, you'll prototype advanced interfaces, transform designs into seamless code, and enhance our design-to-engineering processes.
This individual will act as the connective tissue between design and engineering, owning the processes, tools, and prototype environments that elevate craft, accelerate decision-making, and ensure quality and consistency across platforms.
As an early member of our team, your contributions will play a critical role in shaping the future of our member experience as we scale from hundreds of thousands of members to millions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate and Prototype: Work alongside designers, engineers, and product managers to rapidly prototype interfaces, animations, and features that align with Function's strategy, product goals, design principles and enhance the user experience, leveraging example data sets to create as close to real world experiences as possible.
- Translate Designs into Code: Validate UI components, interactions, and transitions in code, ensuring that visual and interaction designs are brought to life consistently across platforms.
- Enhance Design-to-Engineering Handoff: Improve the workflow between design and engineering by supporting the design system through production, building reusable components, and creating documentation that reduces friction in the design-to-development process.
- Innovate and Experiment: Ability to work in React Native, AI, and other prototyping environments to explore future facing functionality and vision work that drive Function’s strategy and impact.
- Technical Problem Solving: Act as a technical consultant for the design team, addressing complex UX challenges and ensuring that design integrity is maintained without compromising performance or usability.
- Scale Design Standards: Contribute to Function’s design system by developing components and interactions that are scalable, accessible, and maintainable, setting the foundation for a cohesive and high-quality user experience.
Qualifications/Skills:
- Educational Background: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Design, Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field.
- Relevant Experience: 5-6+ years of mobile first experience as a Design Engineer or Mobile Developer role, ideally within a commercial digital product, or tech environment. Previous experience developing and scaling design systems/component libraries and helping teams implement a must.
- Technical Proficiency: Advanced proficiency in React Native required. Additional experience in front-end technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Compose or SwiftUI, Storybook. Motion.dev, Reanimated, Tailwind and frameworks like React or Vue.js a plus.
- Prototyping and Design Systems Knowledge: Experience with prototyping tools (e.g., ProtoPie, Origami, Figma, Framer) and an understanding of design systems and component libraries.
- Design Sensibility and Detail Orientation: Strong eye for design, attention to detail, and passion for creating visually compelling and intuitive digital experiences.
- Communication Skills: Ability to effectively communicate ideas and solutions across cross-functional teams.
- Accessibility-aware mindset: Strong understanding of accessibility standards and platform-specific accessibility behaviors.

- Start-Up Experience: We highly value individuals with start-up experience, especially former founders or early hires. This experience indicates a versatile skill set and an ability to thrive in fast-paced, evolving environments.
- Familiarity with Health Technologies: Knowledge of or experience with popular health technologies, such as Oura, Whoop, Apple Watch, and CGMs (Continuous Glucose Monitors). An interest in or experience with health and wellness technologies suggests a passion for leveraging technology to improve personal and community health outcomes.
