Company Overview:
Function was founded with a singular focus: empower you to live 100 healthy years. We’re doing that by using the best available technology to make sure people don't suffer or die a preventable death. Function has been recognized as one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies of 2024, and is venture-backed by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z).
Hundreds of thousands of members have joined Function to take control of their health. We are growing our team and seeking out world-class talent that deeply believes in our mission to positively impact global health, has a relentless bias toward action and a growth mindset. Function fosters a collaborative and dynamic environment, where every day we are building the future.
Role:
We’re looking for a Creative Director to lead the creative vision for all owned channel narrative content across social platforms. They will oversee the Editorial (Social) Art team, including designers, art directors, producers, video editors and motion designers, all while ensuring that the creative content meets the highest standards for creativity, engagement, and brand integrity.
Our editorial team owns storytelling through Function’s owned and social channels. Through a weekly-themed content strategy, this team creates social-first narratives designed for deep engagement, education, and connection. Unlike traditional social strategies, Function thinks about content like it’s a magazine. Content is guided by a weekly theme and, similar to a themed magazine issue, the team breaks down a theme into a variety of stories across a variety of executions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the art and production teams through creative concepting and execution.
- Partner with the Editorial Director and the Executive Producer on mapping out content approaches for weekly themes.
- Manage Function’s video production content.
- Partner with other creative directors to ensure editorial creative is aligned across all of marketing.
- Build a team that can be fast and nimble at creating social content.
- Collaborate with project managers for creative resourcing.
- Work with the leadership team to ensure Function’s editorial content achieves business goals.
- Map out practical, real-time responses to shifts in content-strategy.
- Identify and address bottlenecks in the creative process, finding ways to move faster and smarter.
- Think big with a “yes, and” attitude.
- Pitch new ideas, trends, and approaches—driving Function’s creative agenda forward.
Qualifications/Skills:
- 10+ years of creative experience with at least 3–5 years in a leadership role directing teams across social and video.
- Strong portfolio of designed and video work for social, with a clear ability to spot hooks, shape narratives, and drive engagement.
- Experience managing and mentoring art directors, designers, and producers.
- Comfort working at speed in a fast-moving, high-volume creative environment.
- Strong understanding of motion graphics and post-production workflows (hands-on experience is a plus).
- Demonstrated experience building or scaling social channels.
- Strong network of freelance talent across creative disciplines.
- An experimental mindset, with enthusiasm for AI tools and other emerging technologies.
Who you are:
- A builder. You have experience scaling social channels, developing content systems, and growing high-performing creative teams.
- A social native. You live and breathe social platforms, with a portfolio showcasing bold, high-performing social-first creative.
- A video enthusiast. You love short-form video and know how to identify both the hook that makes people stop scrolling and the narrative that will keep them until the end.
- A strategic creative. You know how to balance what’s good for the brand with what’s good for the algorithm.
- A trend spotter. You stay ahead of platform algorithm shifts, emerging formats, and cultural trends, guiding the team through constant evolution.
- An ego-free leader. You lead with trust, mentorship, and humility.
- A strong network. You have an extensive roster of freelancers (producers, videographers, video editors, content creators, motion and graphic designers) fluent in social content.
- AI-forward. You’re excited about and already using AI tools in your workflow to push creative boundaries.
- An influencer. You’re experienced working with executives and know how to influence strategy to grow businesses.
- Flexibility. You’re comfortable in a start-up environment that is constantly evolving, and know how to lead creative teams through change.
