Join Cartwheel to help tackle the student mental health crisis.

Kids spend most of their days in the classroom. And teachers and staff, who play a vital role in their development, are often the first to notice when something is off. But with 1 in 5 young people struggling with mental health, schools are getting crushed by a downward spiral in student crises and staff burnout.

With large increases in federal funding for schools and the rise of telehealth, schools are reimagining what mental health support can look like.

Cartwheel is an early-stage startup building technology-enabled mental health services that put schools at the center. We see our role as supporting on-campus counselors, psychologists, and school social workers who see kids every day. Instead of going around them, we collaborate with them. This means:

  • Earlier intervention
  • Higher student and family engagement in care
  • Better coordination among the trusted adults in a student’s life

Kids shouldn't just aspire to get out of bed and drag themselves to class. They should be able to experience joy. They deserve to envision and build a life they’re excited to live. If you join Cartwheel, you’ll help make this vision a reality for millions of students across the country. We’re backed by top investors including Menlo Ventures, Reach Capital, General Catalyst, BoxGroup, and Able Partners, and we're looking for mission-driven teammates to join our team.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Cartwheel is a successful and growing telehealth platform revolutionizing access to mental health care for schools, students, and families. We work with 100 school districts to provide life-saving mental health services to a diverse population (50-50 Medicaid/Commercial mix).

We’re scaling quickly – from 1,000 therapy sessions per week across 6 states today to 2,500 sessions per week in 10 states within a year and secure delegated credentialing agreements with major commercial plans.

As Cartwheel’s Director of Revenue Cycle, you will oversee the entire revenue cycle operation, from group payer enrollment, clinician credentialing, and cross-state licensure, to insurance, school district, and patient billing and accounts receivable.

Location: Remote

Start date: July 1, 2024

Reports to: Head of Operations Victoria Cody

Additionally, you will work closely with operational and clinical leadership, and will manage 5 direct reports across enrollment, credentialing, and revenue cycle.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

In your first 30 days, you’ll:

  • Quickly make our medical billing operation more scalable so that we comfortably handle growing claims volume
  • Partner with the Data team to improve revenue cycle data reporting
  • Assess our current performance and develop a Strategic Roadmap with a prioritized set of challenges to tackle over the next year

In your next 30 days, you’ll:

  • Partner with the Care Operations team to address “upstream” issues that have “downstream” effects (e.g., capture key patient info at intake to avoid claim denials)
  • Partner with the Care Operations and School Success teams to improve how we bill school districts for care provided to uninsured students
  • Partner with the Product and Engineering teams to implement billing automations
  • Secure group contracts with commercial and Medicaid plans across 4 new states

On an ongoing basis, you’ll cultivate a high performance culture, ensuring:

  • All sessions are conducted by credentialed clinicians
  • Claims are submitted within a few days of service
  • Claim denials are kept below 5%
  • Accounts receivable are cleared within 30 days
  • Cost to collect is kept low

Note: We work with a consultant who is handling delegated credentialing, so you’ll work with them but won’t be directly responsible for that portion of the credentialing work.

WHO YOU ARE

  • Embodies our values: Human, Humble, Accountable, Innovative, Resilient
  • Has 7-10+ years of revenue cycle and 5+ years of people management experience
  • Thrives in a world of rapid startup growth
  • Gets stuff done and prioritizes outcomes
  • In the face of competing priorities, prioritizes and moves forward without getting stuck
  • Seamlessly transitions from between thinking and hands-on operations
  • Brings deep behavioral health billing experience, with a keen understanding of:
    • Reporting dashboards, metrics, and targets
    • Behavioral health license types and billing practices (e.g., incident-to-billing)
    • Medicaid-specific billing opportunities (e.g., collateral calls)
    • Organizational structure evolution as we scale

If you have group payer contracting and delegated credentialing experience, even better! But most importantly, you're ready to support our mission and drive the revenue engine that will help tens of thousands of students and families nationwide get the mental health care they need.
